≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈ “Somewhere between the Talmud and the Internet”, this is how the Mnemosyne Atlas Project (1923 – unfinished), by German cultural visionary Aby Warburg ≈ along with Freud and Nietzsche, Aby Warburg (1866 ≈ 1929) was one of the most important pioneers of the humanities of the 19th and 20th centuries ≈ has been described. Warburg himself thought of his gigantic and fragmented constellation of images, rather, as “a ghost story for adults” in which the most resonant truths were suddenly cast into wholly new, multiple and surprising relations. The astounding actuality of Warburg’s Atlas makes it a powerful tool in the analysis of the moving image today, and constitutes the inspiration for the exhibition “Atlas”.≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈≈
“Atlas” presents artists whose works challenge the notion of the image as a crystallization of truth. By adopting images deriving from real, fictive, documentary and biographic material, they speculate and destabilise, structure and reconfigure the moving image. Their practices are neither history nor non history but emerge in a parallel space, born out of the critical debate surrounding cinema verité, televisual culture, the documentary, the archive, post colonial theory and the video essay.
